Authorities in Broussard, Louisiana, are investigating a burglary that occurred at Zoosiana this past weekend. They are now looking for a dozen monkeys that are missing.

The crime is said to have happened on late Saturday night. The zoo disclosed that the burglar went after smaller animal exhibits, really targeting the squirrel monkey enclosure.

They added that they discovered that the monkeys were missing on Sunday morning and checked the health of the monkeys that were still inside.

“It’s a very sad situation. The incident did occur around midnight between Saturday and early Sunday morning. We don’t have a lot of details at this time,” said the director of Zoosiana, Matt Oldenburg.

“We have been very successful with our family of squirrel monkeys…We’ve had a good run with our troop of squirrel monkeys. They’ve been very prolific, and they have very strong family units,” he added.

Authorities are currently reviewing camera footage, and an investigation is on-going.
