A body cam recording has been released by the Volusia County sheriff, in Florida. It depicts a recent apprehension which has been criticized online.
Deltona leaders contacted the Sheriff regarding the arrest after looking at social media and labeling the incident as an “overreaction.”
Detectives say that a sergeant was called to a burglary on July 18. However, the officer unintentionally stopped one street over from the proper address.
In the recording, the sergeant is observed attempting to speak with a driver when things quickly got out of control.
“Even though he’s in the wrong location, he believes he’s in the right location. He’s trying to establish a rapport. She wants to drive away. He reaches in to turn the car off to prevent a pursuit or anything from happening to anybody. She just unloads on him with profanity,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood.
Authorities say that the driver was Iyanna Rollins, 18.
The video also shows the sergeant attempting to handcuff Rollins. Arrest documents state that Rollins kicked the deputy and hit him in the head several times with a closed fist. She is accused of hitting another officer who was trying to fix her handcuffs.
However, some are still criticizing how the sergeant walked up to her car, calling it too aggressive.
“Cops are being gunned down and killed at an alarming rate in this country. He’s responding to a burglar alarm. There’s a car backing out of the driveway. If you don’t like it-sue me. Or run for Sheriff and try to beat me,” Sheriff Chitwood remarked.
Rollins was arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer, and an investigation is continuing.
