A newborn baby was found abandoned in a bathroom trash bin during an Air Mauritius flight Saturday.

The baby was found on an Air Mauritius plane at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on New Year’s Day during a custody check after the flight.

A woman suspected of being the mother was detained and transported to a hospital with the newborn baby. Medical examinations confirmed that the unidentified woman was the mother.

Both the newborn and mother are said to be doing well.

Once the mother is released she will be charged with abandoning a newborn.
