Irving Man Accused of Killing His 81 Year Old Mother Days After Being Released From Jail

A man in Irving, Texas, killed his 81-year-old mother, authorities say. He has been violent with his mother previously and had just been let out of jail a few days before.

Christopher Coggins, 52, was apprehended and faces murder charges in the death of Laverne Coggins.

Irving police say that they conducted a welfare check at a residence on Monday. This occurred in the 600 block of Brookstone Dr. They forced their way into the home and located Christopher in the attic and his mother’s deceased body inside a big, zipped-up bag, in the garage.

Court records reveal that in June, Christopher Coggins was charged with unlawful restraint and injury to an elderly individual after being accused of pushing and hurting Laverne Coggins.

The unlawful restraint charge was dropped, and Christopher received deferred adjudication for the injury offense. He was also ordered not to have any contact with his mother while on probation.

A medical examiner will determine Laverne Coggins’s actual cause of death.

Christopher Coggins’s bail was set at $1 million.
