Athing Mu, a former Texas A&M track star, has made history. She has won the United States’s first gold medal in 53 years in the 800m.
Mu, from New Jersey, completed the race in 1 minute and 55:21 seconds. Her plan was clear: Go to the front and stay there.
She got to Tokyo just a short while after finishing her freshman year of college. There, she broke a lot of records and earned a N.C.A.A. win in the 400m. In late June, she proclaimed that she was going pro and signed a deal with Nike.
Even though Mu said her gold medal win is “insane,” she noted, “I knew this is where I was supposed to be in this point in time. As long as my mind was right, I was going to accomplish my goals.”
