An investigation is underway after an Ohio police fatally shot a man while he was laying in his bed holding a vape pen.
Last week Columbus officers went to 20 year old Donovan Lewis’s apartment to arrest him for multiple warrants, including domestic violence, assault, and felony improper handling of a firearm.
Body cam footage released at a press conference showed Officer Ricky Anderson finding Lewis in a bedroom laying in the bed. As Anderson enters the room Lewis is seen raising his hands with what appeared to be a vape pen.
Anderson immediately fired his weapon when Lewis raised his hands and struck him. Officers immediately went to render aid to Lewis until emergency crews arrived.
Officers found a vape pen on the side of Lewis and no weapons. Lewis was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:19am.
Officer Anderson, who is a 30 year veteran on the force, was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
In a news conference Chief Elaine Bryant said, “Donovan Lewis lost his life. As a parent, you know, I sympathize, and I grieve with his mother. As a community, I grieve with our community, but we’re going to allow this investigation to take place.”
