Businesses Are Turning Down Truckers Because They Can’t Pass Drug Test

1kviews

Chris Pappas, CEO of Chef’s Warehouse, says that he is declining employment to many prospective employees because they can’t pass a drug test. This comes as labor is already short.

His business transports food products to restaurants, and he needs about 1,000 truck drivers.

New trucking regulations were put into place in 2020, and data analyzed in September 2021, showed 72,000 drivers were banned from working.

With the new Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse system, all companies and drivers must submit their up-to-date record every year.

Furthermore, businesses must check the database prior to hiring a new driver. This has prevented drivers from switching companies after failing drug test with another employer.

Some employers are pleased with the new, safer regulations. However, they note that many drivers have been prohibited, and it is difficult to replace them.

The lack of drivers has contributed to setbacks in food and goods supply at businesses. Some ships are also unable to upload their items which has caused issues at the ports.
