On Tuesday afternoon, an inmate was killed in a prison in Windsor, North Carolina.

Semajs Short, 24, was attacked by a group of inmates inside of a housing area at Bertie Correctional Institution, close to 2:15 p.m.
The Department of Public Safety stated that other inmates were hurt, as well, in the group assault.
Less than 30 minutes after the incident began, Short was declared deceased. He had been serving a 25-year sentence for second-degree murder. This was in relation to the death of 2-year-old Dy’Unanna Anderson.
Short was 17 at that time, in 2014, when the girl was killed in retaliation for the murder of Keyuon Garner, 15. That had happened earlier in the day.
In that occurrence, Short and someone else got on top of an air conditioning unit outside of where the girl and her grandmother were sleep. The two-year-old was killed, and the grandmother was shot multiple times.
When Short was killed, authorities note that no staff from the prison was injured. Additionally, the prison was placed on lockdown as police investigate the matter.
