On Tuesday, 20-year-old Hannah Star Esser was charged with murder for the killing of Victor Anthony Luis, 43.

This came after she ran the man over with her Honda Civic, in Orange County, California. She had believed that Luis had tried to kill a cat, authorities say.

On Sunday evening, Esser was driving close to Oak Knoll Park. She then believed she witnessed a man try to run over a cat with an SUV.

She recorded herself on her cellphone, approaching Luis and cursing at him.

At around 8:30 p.m., Esser and Luis exited their vehicles.

Esser then got back into her vehicle, “made a U-turn, accelerated, and drove directly” at Luis, hitting him with her car. The man then landed on the hood of her vehicle and windshield, flipped multiple times, and then fell to the ground. Luis was declared deceased at the scene.

Later that evening, Esser was taken into custody.

Prosecutors are now combing through surveillance footage from residences close by and Esser’s cellphone recording.

Relatives of Luis’ say that he was killed in front of the apartment where he resided.

“We are devastated by the loss of Victor, a beloved father of five daughters, a treasured son, brother, friend, and cousin. This senseless act of violence has robbed the world of a bright light who will never be forgotten,” a statement from the family read.

If convicted, Esser could receive a 25-year sentence in prison.

She is being held on a $1 million bond and will be arraigned on October 13.
