Dallas County Judges are Not Clearing Their Dockets Like Needed

1.3kviews

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price is alarmed about the amount of criminal cases that are backlogged in Dallas County courts.

”These are individuals who are sitting in jail whose cases have not been adjudicated and there are victims and a lot of individuals who are waiting. They are in limbo,” said Price.

Commissioner Price blames judges for not clearing their dockets and only having a few jury trials. He claims that the courts are only doing one or two trials a month.

Price says all 17 felony criminal judges are only having about 12 trials a year. Prior years average at more than 24 a year.

The state requires that counties clear 90% of their dockets by August 1 of every year for five years in a row. If not they risk losing a $50 million grant.

According to county records, judges’ salaries are anywhere from $150,000 to $200,000.

Commissioners are going to start releasing how many trials every judge is having and how many cases they are clearing. This will show which judges are performing and which are not.

Since judges are elected, commissioners say holding them accountable is the only power they have to get them to work.
