Dallas County Program Offers Free Air Conditioning Units To Families In Need

As summer approaches in North Texas, Dallas County will be offering free air conditioners to some low-income families in the area.

“So we’re providing AC units for those families who don’t have any A/C at all at home. We understand that many families have children, elderly at home, and not having A/C, there’s a great risk of dehydration or death,” stated Christian Grisales of Dallas County Health and Human Services.

Catina Jones, of South Dallas, submitted an application for Dallas County’s Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program. Then, on Wednesday, her wish was granted.

“The air conditioner was taking so long to come on. It was hard to keep cool,” Jones said.

A group went to Jones’ residence, close to Fair Park, and got rid of her old air conditioner. Then, they replaced it with a brand new 3-ton unit that’s worth between $8,000 to $10,000.

For Jones, she didn’t have to pay a penny.

“…it feels so good to help these people, you know? They’re going through a lot. They don’t have a whole lot of money to afford some of this stuff right here,” stated Daniel Martinez with HVAC Service Pro.

“I’m just ecstatic because, without the county, I don’t know how I’d be able to do it,” Jones added.

The Dallas County Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program doesn’t cost anything for those who are eligible. The program lasts each year from January to December and provides heating and cooling services. It also pays for electric bills.
