Daycare Director Found Giving Melatonin to Children Before Naptime

4kviews

A daycare director, who’s accused of giving children melatonin daily without parent consent, is now behind bars and facing 11 felony charges.

According to prosecutors, Tonya Voris, Director at Kidz Life Childcare Ministry in Cumberland, Indiana, routinely gave 17 children melatonin gummies before nap time. The melatonin supplement, which was given to children ages 1 to 4, caused the children to feel sleepy, lethargic, and have headaches.

Parents began noticing the changed behavior and raised concerns to the daycare. A Probable Cause Affidavit states that Voris was immediately fired and police were contacted. She was then arrested and charged.

In an interview with detectives, the 52-year-old admitted to giving unauthorized doses to the children and said she was pleased with the effects. However, in court on Monday, she pleaded not guilty and had her bond set at $15,000.

Voris faces 11 felony counts of neglect and 6 misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment. Her pre-trial hearing is scheduled for April 5.
