DPS Trooper Killed While Mowing His Grass

The Jefferson County, Texas, sheriff’s office has suffered the loss of one of its own.

On Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 8:12 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a call of a crash in the 1900 block of Burrell-Wingate Road.

A sheriff’s deputy who was mowing his lawn, James Lee, 71, was hit by a 2017 Toyota SUV. The driver had been speeding and tried to turn a curb. The vehicle then left the roadway and struck the victim, authorities say.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to a hospital for medical attention. A required specimen of his blood was drawn, as well.

Afterward, Michael Miller, the 38-year-old driver from Beaumont, Texas, was apprehended for felony intoxicated manslaughter and unlawful carrying of a weapon which is a misdemeanor.

Texas DPS troopers are still investigating the matter.
