Family Awarded $8.25 Million After Body Cam Footage Reveals Them Being Forcefully Detained At Starbucks

A black family was unlawfully apprehended at a Starbucks in California as they were taking a break while heading to take a college math exam in 2019.

Now, a recording of the incident can be seen.

On Wednesday, Aasylei Loggervale and her two daughters, were given $8.25 million in compensation by a California jury.

The family accused Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies of targeting them because they were black and in the car parked in front of a Starbucks in Castro Valley.

The family had traveled from Las Vegas to Berkeley City College in California so that Loggervale’s older daughter could take a statistics test. They had stopped at the Starbucks to take a break, get coffee, and use the restroom.

The complaint notes that two white officers, Steven Holland and Monica Pope, came up to them asking for identification. They claimed to be looking for car theft suspects.

However, Loggervale didn’t want to provide her identification as seen on the bodycam footage.

Following an altercation, Holland made the family get out of the vehicle, and they were detained.

Without giving a reason, the officers apprehended, handcuffed, and forcefully placed them in a police car, the lawsuit stated.

After several minutes, the family was let go and wasn’t cited or charged. Documents note that they all had bruises to their arms, wrists, and experienced emotional distress.

The jury sided with the family and determined that Holland and Alameda County will have to pay the mother $2.75 million and $2 million to each daughter. Likewise, Pope and the county was ordered to pay each daughter $750,000.

It was also stated that neither officer was disciplined for their actions; in fact, Holland was later promoted to captain.

  1. You have made some decent points there. I looked on the web to find out more about the issue and found most individuals
will go along with your views on this web site.

  3. That’s what is wrong with our system, promoting an individual due to their incompetence. This officer should have been terminated and given a bad review so he can not be involved in policing. The taxpayers are on the hook due to his actions.

  4. When will people realize that simply complying with a simple request is. providing your identification when asked or told to by a police officer almost every one of these mistaken abuses could have been avoided. You wonder why an officer doesn’t give you a reason for requesting your ID even though you just refused to provide one for him with no reason for not doing so. I guess it would have been better if they had been placed under arrest and taken into the police station for booking just because they didn’t want to show their ID when requested? As far as being placed in handcuffs, that is for the protection of both you and the officer. After all you did just refuse to provide an identification to an officer who doesn’t know you from Adam and if you decided to walk away without giving any proof of who you are and they’re looking for a suspected car thief they could theoretically use any force they felt necessary to detain you from escaping. To many people are complaining about them having rights when a little respect would do a lot more with less stress for all.

    1. Respect?!? Respect goes both ways asshole. The car theirs they were supposedly looking for was just a bullshit excuse to fuck w a black family because they figured they would be able to make an arrest or citation to make their quota. Why should they or anyone bow down to the piece of shit police nlbecause they say whatever they want to and ask for your i.d. they were literally just sitting there! No reason at all to believe they were the supposed car theirs. It’s ridiculous that you would immediately just bow down to the pigs cuz they give you some bull shit excuse as to why they are blaming you just because your sitting in your own God damn car out front of America’s favorite, Starbucks. You and all the dumbasses in this country need to be lebotomized. Your thinking is outdated and not your own. The police aren’t your friends they are the enemy who straight rules your entire life. Fuck the police and fuck the system. You are a joke. I’m a white male BTW. The pigs are trash who have a power trip complex. Almost every single one I’ve dealt with.

    2. Please learn the law! This kind of thinking is the problem. He had no reason to detain them and when asked to call a supervisor he should have complied. They didn’t have to show ID without knowing the reason they were being detained. Just because there had been car thefts in the area is NOT a reason to detain anyone or ask to see an ID.
