A South Carolina father will spend the next 28 years in prison after leaving his 19 month old daughter inside a burning car while he fled from police in 2019.
Imhotep O. Norman of Spartanburg was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to the 2019 death of his daughter, Xena Norman.
According to reports, in 2019 Norman led police on a chase when he refused to pull over for speeding.
Instead, Norman crossed the median as flames and smoke spewed from his car.
He then crossed onto another highway before jumping out and running into the woods.
When firefighters extinguished the car they found Xena’s lifeless body inside.
Norman was arrested hours later and told officers he thought they would save his daughter.
He was arrested and charged with child abuse, failure to stop for a blue light and siren, and several drug charges.
After an autopsy was performed Xena died from burns and acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
Norman will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he’s eligible for parole.
