A father in St. Petersburg, Florida, fatally shot his 9-year-old son. He then shot and killed himself, authorities stated on Monday.
Close to 6 p.m., on Sunday night, the young boy’s mother had gone to retrieve her son. He had been spending time with his father over the weekend.
However, when the mother arrived to the Trellis at the Lakes Apartment Complex, the father wasn’t coming to the door or answering his phone.
When the mother requested that the police conduct a welfare check, the officers said that they didn’t believe foul play was involved. Therefore, they couldn’t legally go inside of the apartment.
Around 9:45 a.m., on Monday morning, the mother returned to the complex and asked apartment managers to open the man’s door.
That’s when the deceased bodies of Kevin Bybee, 44, and the boy, Andres Chateau, were discovered.
Evidence first collected at the scene showed that the father shot his son and then killed himself.
“They had been in a contentious custody dispute, but there had been no threats or signs beforehand that it would get to this point. This is just a very, very tragic end,” stated a spokesperson for St. Petersburg Police Department.
Records also show that Bybee was facing eviction from his apartment.
The matter continues to be under investigation.
