On Friday, five MS-13 gang members were convicted by a federal jury. This was for their parts in the abduction and vicious killing of two teens in Virginia. The victims had been suspected of being a member of a rival gang and a police informant.
Elmer Martinez, 31, Ronald Contreras, 24, Henry Martinez, 28, Pablo Barrera, 24, and Duglas Ferrera, 26, from El Salvador, were convicted. They planned to take and kill a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old.
On August 28, 2016, the gang members got the two boys to go to Holmes Run Stream Valley Park for what they said was a gang meeting in the woods.
Then, they held the 17-year-old boy down, cut up his body over 100 times, and placed it in a hole in the ground.
They then attacked and repeatedly stabbed the 14-year-old, killing him. The gang members broke both of his legs, bound him with his own pajamas, and stuck his body in a hole, too.
The men recorded the incident so that gang leaders in the U.S. and El Salvador could see it and prove their rank.
The remains of the boys had finally been found in March 2017 and December 2017.
On Friday, all five men were found guilty of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and murder in aid of racketeering activity. They were also convicted of conspiracy to kidnap and kidnapping resulting in death. They could all receive life sentences.
MS-13 is a transnational gang, comprised mostly of people from Salvadoran or other Central American descent.
The gang has over 10,000 members, operating in at least 10 states, Central America, and Mexico.
