Former Jailor Charged With Sexual Misconduct

Kayla Mae Bergom, 27, a former correctional officer, was arrested on April 20,2022 after a warrant was issued for her arrest for allegedly having a sexual affair with one of her jailed inmates.

Bergom, who worked at Tama County Jail as a jailor, was found to have had many sexual encounters in a utility closet and recreational yard with a 29-year-old inmate.

The sexual relationship began in September 2020 and lasted 7 months while Bergom was employed at the jail, according to DCI Investigators.

Bergom worked at the jail for three years and resigned because of the allegations, according to Tama County Sheriff Dennis Kucera

Bergom has been charged with three misdemeanor counts of sexual misconduct with an offender.

In may she pleaded not guilty for the charges and faces a maximum of six years if convicted.
