A former North Carolina Central University employee is accused of embezzling over $900,000 from the school.
Kenya M. Ward,44, was arrested Thursday on a charge of embezzlement of state property.
She was released on a $1 million unsecured bond.
Ward allegedly took $900,284 from the University’s bookstore and food services departments between January 2018 and April of this year. Ward was office manager for the school’s Eagle Card. Students use the card to access their meal plans, buy books and pay for classes.

A statement from the school was released saying, “North Carolina Central University is committed to preserving administrative and fiscal integrity across the institution. As a part of this ongoing due diligence, an investigation was recently conducted in response to an internal inquiry regarding misappropriation of funds within a unit of Auxiliary Enterprises. The conclusion of this review resulted in the removal of personnel and realignment of processes. While the university is confident it has addressed the issue in its entirety, we have nevertheless engaged an external firm to conduct a more extensive review and recommend additional security measures, procedural changes or policy enhancements as warranted.”
Ward is no longer employed with the school.
