The FBI are investigating after over $600,000 in Dallas County Jail inmates commissary funds started missing.
During a meeting Tuesday, it was said that a Sheriff’s Department employee discovered improprieties between the years of 2015 to 2021.
The County Auditor found 306 inmate debit cards totaling $699,993 were issued in excess of the inmates trust fund balances.
A check for $97,390.79 was returned to the program by a vendor on July 27, 2021.
The remaining funds are still missing.
Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia said in a statement, “One thing that I have great concern is the access to inactive inmate accounts. That means that when an inmate leaves, people can continue to conduct transactions on inactive accounts.”
Changes have been made but the investigation remains ongoing.
