A gang that kidnapped a group of American and Canadian missionaries in Haiti is asking for $17 million for their release.
Haitian Justice Minister Liszt Quitel said the gang demanded $1 million per person for the group’s release.
16 Americans and one Canadian were kidnapped by the “400 Mawozo” gang on Saturday after visiting an orphanage in Croix-des-Bouquets.
The FBI and Haitian police have made contact with the gang and say negotiations could take weeks.

The missionaries were based out of Ohio and believed to have all being in one vehicle when kidnapped.
The abducted group consisted of five men, seven women and five children.
Amongst those children abducted were an 8 month old baby and minors ages 3, 6, 14 and 15.
A State Department spokesman said in a statement Monday, “The welfare and safety of US citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the Department of State. We have been in regular contact with senior Haitian authorities and will continue to work with them and inter-agency partners.”
