Hospital Mistakingly Tell A Woman Her Husband Is Dead When He’s Actually Still Alive

Betty Harris visited her husband, Bryant Harris, on March 7 at a rehabilitation center. Bryant was recovering from knee surgery. However, on March 8 she received call about her husband being dead.

”[The doctor] said, ‘It’s about your husband.’ I said, ‘My husband was in rehabilitation.’ He said ‘No, your husband is in the emergency room.’” Harris explained.
“I said, ‘What’s wrong? Is he alright?’ [The doctor] said ‘No, he’s dead,’” she said.
Harris, stunned and taken aback by the news, started calling family and friends.

Betty arrived at the hospital to identify her husband’s body, but upon arrival, she noticed that the person to be identified was not her husband.

The hospital has yet to issue a direct statement about these events

The rehabilitation center was apologetic for the confusion and issued a public statement.

“At Deerbrook Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, our patient’s health and safety remain are our number one priority. We strive to deliver high-quality care every day with compassionate nursing and caregiving staff. Regrettably, our team transferred a patient to the hospital with incorrect identifying paperwork,” the facility said in a statement.
“We have communicated with the hospital and families involved to address this situation and are truly sorry for our mistake.”

Betty determined that someone at the rehabilitation center had frantically left Bryant’s chart while rushing a different patient to the hospital.

She describes the misunderstanding as “horrifying” and wishes the hospital and rehabilitation facility would communicate effectively with each other moving forward.
