Illinois Police No Longer Permitted To Deceive Minors

In Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill into law. It stops authorities from lying or using deceiving methods when questioning those who are under 18.

In 1969, these methods were said to be okay, but the governor’s office stated that these tactics are not the best. They said it is not effective, “because of the risk it poses in producing false confessions.”

Police attempt to get people to admit to crimes by saying certain things that may not be true, even telling some they can go home if they confess.

Minors are more likely to admit to crimes they weren’t apart of under these tactics.

Out of 100 wrongfully convicted cases in Illinois, 31 are related to kids.

“Today is about putting words into action as we continue to work to correct the wrongs of the past. Wrongs inflicted by law enforcement, including prosecutors,” declared Kim Foxx, a county state attorney.
