Kidney Goes In Wrong Patient At An Ohio Hospital

An Ohio hospital transplanted a kidney into the wrong person. The would-be recipient has  still not had the life-saving surgery, officials said on Monday.

University Hospitals apologized for the medical mix-up in a statement. They said they put two employees on leave. Meanwhile, they are figuring out how the organ wound up inside of the wrong person’s body.

The person who obtained the kidney was compatible with the donated organ and is healing. However, the other person’s transplant surgery “has been delayed,” the statement noted.

The medical mishap surgery occurred on July 2, a spokesman stated.

The United Network for Organ Sharing, which oversees transplants, has been notified. “…..to understand what led to the error and to ensure that such an event will never happen again,” the statement said.

“…. The situation is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to helping patients return to health and live life to the fullest.”
