A man in Jacksonville, Florida, was in jail for 30 hours after being accused of killing his friend/neighbor’s pet rooster. He said that the rooster was a menace in the community and attacked him.

James Nix Jr. struck his neighbor’s pet rooster, Big Roo, with a stick in May. He stated that the rooster had trailed behind him and attacked him, so he attempted to get the animal away from him.

“It’s neck flares up and he’s doing his thing, and he’s trying to jump up at me. So, I’m defending myself. You know, I was fearing for my safety, and the chicken died,” Nix commented.

Nix says the death was accidental.

“I didn’t know to give it a 21-gun salute. CPR, mouth-to-mouth, you know? Or call the chicken ambulance?” Nix added.

Jason Defelice, his neighbor, contacted authorities regarding the incident. He thinks that Nix killed Big Roo intentionally.

“Next thing you know, he calls the chicken police on me,” Nix stated.

Nix was jailed for animal cruelty in June. He says he shouldn’t have been apprehended.

“Chickens dying every day- people at Church’s, Popeyes, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Really,” he said.

The neighbor doesn’t agree about the roosters actions. Defelice stated that he wasn’t aware of any occurrences, but Nix said he was informed when it attacked his father.

Defelice added that the children in the community liked to play with the rooster by chunking rocks at it. However, Nix says they were attempting to keep the rooster away.
