A New York man was charged with murder after fatally shooting a woman inside her vehicle when she mistakenly drove into his driveway.

On Monday, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan was officially charged with her death for the Saturday night shooting.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis, and three others were driving down the dirt, country roads looking for their friend’s house when they pulled into Monahan’s driveway. The group of friends, who never got out of the vehicle, realized their error and were attempting to turn around when Monahan fired two rounds into the vehicle.

The friends noticed that Gillis, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was struck and immediately continued to flee the scene, traveling 6 miles before being able to get cell service and phone 911. When paramedics arrived at their location, Gillis was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers arrived at Monahan’s residence shortly after but were unable to get him to cooperate. After about an hour, he was taken into custody.
