An employee was killed while attempting to disarm an active shooter at a Safeway Supermarket in Bend, Oregon.

On August 28, 20-year-old Ethan Blair Miller entered the back of a shopping center. He fired shots into a Big Lots store and a Costco parking lot. There were no injuries reported at either location, according to Bend Police Department’s communication director, Sheila Miller.

Police believe the shooter went into the Safeway and shot 84-year-old Glenn Edward Bennett near an entrance. Bennett was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Miller.

The suspect continued in the Supermarket when an employee, 66-year-old Donald Ray Surrett, ended up getting shot after he attempted to disarm him.

Police arrived at the Safeway and found the shooter dead from a self-inflicted wound.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz told reporters that investigators have not determined a motive for the deadly shooting.
