Man Given 96 Years In Prison After Trying To Kill Two Police Officers

1.1kviews

On Thursday, 21-year-old Matthew Cotter was given 96 years in prison after shooting two Fort Lupton, Colorado, police officers.

In December 2019, Sgt. Christopher Pelton and Sergeant Jeremy Sagner had come to a scene where there was a suspected gunman. The gunman was attempting to come in contact with his ex-girlfriend who was inside of the residence. He had stated that he was going to hurt her and then himself, authorities say.

Cotter then shot both officers, striking Pelton in the face, when they came on the scene. The incident was recorded on body camera footage, and Pelton could be seen experiencing complications as he was laying in the snow.

Cotter will now spend 96 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Sgt. Pelton was praised with a purple heart as he continues to heal.

“I’m very fortunate that this was an attempted murder case and not a murder case. The moment the bullet went through my head, I wasn’t even there going after the defendant. I was there to protect the scene. If someone was going to get shot that day, I’m glad it was me and not one of my young officers,” Pelton stated.
