A man from Tallahassee, Florida, was given 9 years in prison after he was said to have scammed women via online dating websites.

Federal prosecutors released a statement on the matter on Sept. 1.

The Department of Justice says that 47-year-old Brian Brainard Wedgeworth pled guilty to twenty-five counts of aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering. This came back in May after federal prosecutors said that Wedgeworth defrauded several women from 2016 to 2021. He had posed as a doctor and requested gifts like watches and jewelry.

Wedgeworth is accused of making promises to the women in order to receive gifts and defrauded at least 30 women of over $1.3 million, in total.

He will now have to pay $1,161,325.82 in restitution. Once he is freed from prison, Wedgeworth will have to be on three years supervised release.

The Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Postal Service are still looking into the matter, searching for other victims.
