Dallas County Criminal District Attorney John Creuzot’s office sentenced a man to life in prison following their newly created Vehicular Crimes Unit (VCU).
John Creuzot’s office secured it’s first guilty verdict against 38 year old Bobby Lee Murphy for the 2021 crash that killed 28 year old Karla Rico.
The incident initially happened in 2016 when Murphy ran a red light in Garland and struck Rico. Murphy was driving at least 99mph when he struck the car Rico and her son were driving in.
Rico and her dog were killed during the crash while her 10 year old son was left in critical condition.
After just 20 minutes of deliberation the jury found Murphy guilty.
Lead prosecutor Andrew James said, “This defendant’s selfish choices caused the ultimate tragedy for Karla Rico and her family,”. I’m grateful to the Garland Police Department for their hard work and thorough investigation – we would not have been able to obtain justice for Mrs. Rico and her family without it – and I’m grateful to the jury for giving justice to Karla Rico’s family and ensuring that this defendant will never have the opportunity to harm another innocent family again.”
