Marissa Gutierrez, a 23 year-old mother from New Mexico, was accused of permitting child abuse to take place.
In 2019, she was first charged with first-degree child abuse for torturing her 4 year-old son for about 5 months.
A family member had taken him to a hospital when an abnormal heart beat was noticed.
Authorities stated that the child had been starved, confined to a closet, and beaten. He weighed 33 pounds at the time.
The boy experienced a brain bleed, broken body parts, and cuts all over. He told police that his injuries were his punishment by his mom’s girlfriend, Jivona Sandoval, 23. Her and her mother have been charged.
Gutierrez said the child hurt himself and broke his arm in the bathtub.
After investigating further, police say Sandoval was largely responsible for the acts.
Gutierrez took a plea deal in exchange for her testimony against her girlfriend.
She has accepted legal culpability for felony child abuse in the third degree. It’s possible she will get a suspended sentence and supervised probation with no jail time.
