Martin E. Tavarez-Torres, 21, was apprehended Wednesday in the death of his co-worker at a Gentry restaurant in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Tavarez-Torres was connected with capital murder, battery, and aggravated assault.

Fidel Mercado Reyes, a cook at La Huerta restaurant, was shot once in the back of the head. The suspected shooter was Tavarez-Torres, the nephew of the owner that had only been employed for one day.

One worker stated that after hearing an explosion in the kitchen, she observed the suspect run by her and discovered Reyes on the floor.

Tavarez-Torres then left in his pickup truck but was later found. Reyes was pronounced deceased at a hospital.

Family members believe that Reyes was killed over a winning slot machine ticket he won from a casino. They think the ticket’s worth was $20,000 or $200,000 because it was valued at 200,000 credits.

The family told police that Reyes attempted to cash it out, but couldn’t because his passport wasn’t valid.

The winning ticket was located in Reyes’ jacket.
