New Orleans Closes All Bars Down Until After Mardi Gras To Help Fight The Spread Of COVID-19
Just weeks ahead of Mardi Gras, The Mayor of New Orleans, Latoya Cantrell, announced Friday that she will be shutting down all bars, both indoors in out, citywide, to help fight the spread of Covid-19.
Major streets that are normally high trafficked during the festivities surrounding the French Quarter will have several checkpoints and roadblocks, according to city officials. Anyone who plan on entering streets like Bourbon Street, Frenchman Street, and Decatur Street, who is not a resident nor business owner will be denied access, according to a statement released from city officials.
Heavy crowd control tactics starts this weekend, Cantrell said. Bars are required to begin shutting down next Friday and continues through Mardi Gras, aka, “Fat Tuesday” on Feb 16th.
“To those that are upset about these restrictions, known that when it comes to the health of our people, I’d rather be accused of doing too much than not enough,” Cantrell wrote on Twitter after the city news conference was held Friday.
The Famous Mardi Gras parade has already been cancelled. The bar closures are going to intercept sales for to-go drinks, packaged liquor sales, even affecting sales for street vendors and performers.
Any Business that violates the rules will faces immediate on the spot shutdowns and will lose their license.
The mayor urged all citizens to follow all safety precautions during one of the biggest tourism times of the year.
“If by chance you have an aversion to wearing a mask, stay exactly where you’re at,” said city council member Jay Banks, who stated that he knows 23 people who have died from complications related to Covid-19. “If your expectation is the Mardi Gras of the past, don’t even waste your money.”
As a substitute for the yearly Mardi Gras Parade, thousands of New Orleans residents have decided to decorate their homes as floats.
