The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting at an unsanctioned trail ride event, where three people were injured, one critically.
On August 2, around 1:30 a.m., deputies responded to a report of gunfire on the 800 block of Batchelor Road in Red Oak. When they arrived, they found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
All victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment; one person remains in the intensive care unit.
The shooting occurred at an unapproved “trail ride” event that was advertised as a ticketed gathering with live entertainment and a back-to-school cash giveaway, according to an event flyer obtained by the sheriff’s office.
Officials noted that most attendees were not residents of Ellis County and had traveled from neighboring counties.
State law mandates that large-scale events meeting specific attendance thresholds must obtain a permit from the county, but authorities confirmed that no permit was issued for this event.
