A woman was taken into custody after a baby girl was found abandoned in a dumpster at an apartment complex in North Austin on Saturday.

At a press briefing on Thursday, authorities identified 22-year-old Neli Dinora Rivera-Felipe, who is also the child’s mother, as the suspect.

The infant was discovered alive in the dumpster at the 8600 block of North Lamar Boulevard around 1:37 p.m. on September 20, with the umbilical cord still attached.

Current investigations suggest the baby was not born in a hospital. She was transported to Dell Children’s Medical Center for treatment and is reported to be in good condition.

Rivera-Felipe reportedly told authorities she dumped the baby into the dumpster on the night of September 19, believing the infant was already deceased.

Surveillance footage from that night shows an individual disposing of the contents of a white bucket into the dumpster.

Rivera-Felipe was booked into Travis County Jail on September 23 on felony charges of abandoning or endangering a child. She remains in custody with a $50,000 bond.

Police have confirmed that no other suspects are involved at this time.
