Garland Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred at a motel near Northwest Highway and 635 LBJ Freeway.

On Wednesday, June 4, around 1:50 p.m., officers from the Garland Police Department responded to Motel 6 at 12721 LBJ Freeway following reports of a disturbance between a guest and hotel staff.

When officers approached the individual, he brandished a firearm, prompting them to seek cover for their safety. The department’s SWAT team was summoned to handle the situation, and a warrant was secured for his arrest.

To ensure safety, nearby rooms were evacuated. SWAT negotiators attempted to communicate with the barricaded suspect, but he refused to respond.

After negotiations proved unsuccessful, officers deployed tear gas into the room in an effort to encourage surrender. As they moved toward the window, the suspect pointed a firearm at a SWAT team member inside the room. In response, the officer fired his rifle, striking the suspect. Officers then entered the room and found him deceased from gunfire.

Inside the same room, a second individual was also discovered dead. Initial investigations suggest that this person had been deceased for some time prior to the incident.

Fortunately, no officers were injured during the event.

The Garland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is actively reviewing the circumstances leading up to the shooting and the deaths of both individuals.

The individual shot by officers has been identified as 52-year-old Shawn Dylan Burt, a resident of Hutchins, Texas.

The second individual found deceased in the room has been identified as 69-year-old Donald Bailey Sr., a resident of Dallas.
