Two women and a child are dead, and two other children were seriously injured after a mass shooting occurred in the Greater Grand Crossing community of Chicago on Thursday morning.
At about 6:15 a.m., officers answered to an alert of shots fired in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue. They then discovered that five people had been shot.
Two vehicles entered the area, and then several people exited and fired shots from a rifle and handgun at the residence.
The assailants left the scene in an unknown direction, and no one has been apprehended.
The victims who died have been identified as 24-year-old Capri Edwards, 45-year-old Nakeeisha Strong, and an 8-year-old boy. Two other boys, 5 and 8, were unharmed. They all experienced gunshot injuries, and first aid was administered by officers.
Strong died at the location, and Edwards was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she was declared deceased.
All three children was transported to a children’s hospital, and at first, were reported in critical condition. However, later on, authorities announced that an 8-year-old boy had died, as well.
“She shielded her babies, so they wouldn’t get hit. So, she really died trying to save her children,” stated Edwards’s mother.
Authorities say that they are now investigating the possibility that the shooting derived from a personal disagreement.
