An off-duty Chicago police officer was killed right outside of her residence on the South Side of the city on Saturday morning.

The tragedy occurred at 8157 S. Blackstone Ave. just prior to 1:45 a.m. as she was just getting home from work. She has been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Areanah Preston, 24.

A recording from a nearby doorbell camera depicted emergency crews arriving to the scene. It has been reported that she had been shot multiple times.

At a news conference on Saturday, it was stated that another officer had transported Preston to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she passed away from her gunshot injuries.

A motive for the shooting is unknown, and it isn’t clear if the officer’s service weapon was used or found. Additionally, no suspects are in custody at this time.

Preston was expected to graduate from Loyola University next weekend as she was earning her master’s degree.

An investigation into her killing is on-going.
