$4.4 million in PPP loans given to Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church last year will be paid back.
The Houston church got the money in December. Many church-state separation groups criticized Lakewood. These groups believed that since the loans were forgivable, they were basically grants from the government. They say that this subsidizes religious practices and violates the constitution.
The church stood by their actions for trying to get the loan, stating that the money would not be used by the pastor or his wife.
“Like many organizations temporarily shuttered by the pandemic, this loan provided Lakewood Church short-term financial assistance. In 2020, it ensured that its approximate 350 employees and their families would continue to receive a paycheck and full healthcare benefits,” a spokesperson for the church said.
Osteen has been the overseer of the church since his dad’s passing in 1999. The church membership stands at over 52,000 people.
