Police Department Creates New Policy Banning Officers From Chasing Suspects on Foot
A new Chicago Police Department policy was put in place on Tuesday that prevents officers from chasing suspects on foot.
The policy bans officers from pursuing someone on foot simply because they ran away from law enforcement. If a suspect is believed to have committed a minor offense and bails on foot, CPD will no longer chase.
Detailed in the policy are the few instances in which a foot chase is permissible. An officer may pursue a person who is committing a felony, a Class A misdemeanor such as domestic battery, or a serious traffic offense that poses a threat to others.
The announcement of the new policy comes after two fatal foot chases in Chicago. In March 2021, Chicago Police Officers shot and killed Adam Toledo, 13, and Anthony Alvarez, 22, during separate chases.
Officers shot Toledo after he dropped his gun and surrendered. Alvarez was shot in the back while brandishing a gun.
Despite these two recent incidents that gained the media’s attention and forced heat onto the department, CPD says the new policy is not a direct result relating to those cases.
