Police Investigate The Fatal Shooting Of Auxiliary Bishop As A Homicide

On Saturday, just before 1 p.m., deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department answered to an emergency call in Hacienda Heights.

Then, Bishop David O’Connell was discovered in a room of a residence in the 1500 block of Janlu Ave. The 69-year-old auxiliary bishop with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, for 45 years, was found with a gunshot injury to the upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other information, including possible suspects, has been released at this time. However, the death has been ruled as a homicide.

O’Connell was born in Ireland in 1953. He was appointed to auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by Pope Francis in 2015.

He was the chairman of the Interdiocesan Southern California Immigration Task Force, assisting in managing the church’s response to immigrat children and others from Central America.

An investigation into the homicide is on-going.
