On Saturday, the San Jose, California, police department stated that rookie police officer Dejon Packer died, in March, from substance abuse.

24-year-old Packer, an ex-running back for the San Jose State University football team, was discovered deceased in his residence. Sources say that Packer had attended a party with other officers the evening prior to his death.

The Santa Clara County Medical examiner documented that Packer died from fentanyl toxicity.

“This behavior is not something we condone…,” expressed Police Chief Anthony Mata.

The police department added that they offer assistance to officers who are in need of help to deal with traumatic events that may occur while on duty. These services are provided in order to prevent drug abuse.

“As humans, we are not perfect and mistakes will be made. Officer wellness is paramount and a priority at our agency,” he added.

Packer’s relatives said that they were astonished to learn the reason that he died. They said that they had no idea that he was involved in drug abuse, noting that he was “heavily against it, as evidenced by his profession.”

Additionally, the family says that they will follow the investigation closely.
