A police officer, who is also a school resource officer, in Carrollton, Georgia, was terminated on Friday. He was later apprehended for child molestation, authorities say.

On Thursday, Carrollton City Schools called police about “allegations of criminal misconduct.” Close to an hour after his termination was made known, it was announced that Cpl. Jerric Gilbert, 35, had been taken into custody. He was charged with one count of child molestation and violation of oath by a public officer.

Authorities say that Gilbert has been charged because of an occurrence at his home. This is where he is said to have gotten an 11-year-old girl to touch him in inappropriate places, on April 15.

The police department stated that they acted swiftly and have started an internal investigation.

Gilbert was employed at Carrollton Elementary School. He was being held at the Carroll County Jail.

The officer had worked for the Carrollton Police Department since 2015. In November, he was moved up to the rank of corporal.

Records show no indication that Gilbert had any disciplinary history.
