Second Officer, Jeffrey Smith, Commits Suicide After Capitol Riot

A second officer that was on duty during the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol earlier this month has committed suicide.
According to news reports, acting Metro Police Chief Robert J. Contee III stated at a news conference Tuesday night that a police officer with the city’s police department has taken his own life after the deadly riot on Jan 6. Chief conte identified the deceased officer as Jerry Smith. He had been with the Metro Police Department for a total of 12 years.
It is said that Officer Smith had took his life on Jan 15. According to the Washington Post, Smith was assigned as a patrol officer working in the city’s second district and happened to be at the Capitol when Trump supporters stormed the building on the day that Congress were weighing in on electoral votes from November’s election. The police chief did not offer information on to how Officer Smith took his own life.
Smith is the second officer who has committed suicide since the deadly riot. Previously reported by CrimeOnline, Capitol Police Officer, Howard Liebengood, committed suicide on Jan 9. A third police officer, 42-year-old Brian Sicknick, passed away on Jan 7, due to injuries sustained during the encounter with protestors.
