Deputy 1st Class Glenn Hilliard, a Maryland sheriff’s deputy, was fatally shot. This happened on Sunday evening as he chased a fugitive, authorities say.

The incident occurred close to 8:25 p.m, outside of an apartment complex in the city of Pittsville.

Austin Jacob Allen Davidson, 20, surrendered to authorities. This was nearly two hours after the shooting and a search by several law enforcement entities.

Davidson is facing charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. He also faces charges of using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

He is in custody at the Wicomico County Detention Center with no bond.

Police had been looking for Davidson because of four active warrants when Hilliard saw him at the Talbot Apartments.

They say that Hilliard was on a foot pursuit, chasing Davidson. The suspect then shot the officer with a handgun and ran away from the location.

Hilliard was transported to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The Maryland State Police will be performing a homicide investigation.

The 41-year-old officer had been in law enforcement for 16 years. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
