A convenience store in Richland County, South Carolina, is being closely guarded after vandalism and looting have taken place. This came following the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy by the owner of the store.
On Sunday, close to 8 p.m., in the city of Columbia, Cyrus Carmack-Belton, had entered the store. The owner approached the teen and accused him of stealing. Cyrus then ran out of the store as the owner chased him down, while carrying a firearm. Reports indicate that the teen’s shoe came off, and he fell before getting back up and running again. The owner then shot the teen in the back.
Authorities say that they received information that Cyrus had a gun, and they did find one close to his body. Documents state that the owner saw the gun and fired his own weapon one time.
Carmack-Belton suffered a gunshot wound to his lower back in a manner that “seems to be consistent with someone who was running away from the assailants,” the coroner noted.
Additionally, authorities say that there is no proof that the teen had stolen from the store.
The killing of Cyrus has led to protests throughout the city as many have called for justice.
Rick Chow, 58, has been named as the store owner. He was apprehended and taken into custody for murder on Monday. On Tuesday, his bond was denied, and he is expected to appear in court again on June 23.
