Supreme Court Reverses Judge’s Ruling to Add Extra Years on a Sentence After an Outburst
A Supreme Court has upheld an appeal and reversed a judge’s decision to add 6 years on a sentence he was weighing down to a defendant after the man had an outburst in court.
Mason Bryant was found guilty of aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, and abduction in 2019. A Pleas Court judge, Eugene Lucci, had sentenced Bryant to 22 years in prison.
After hearing his lengthy sentence, Bryan shouted, “Twenty-two years? Man, f*** your courtroom, you racist-a** b****.”
Judge Lucci then said, “Actually, You know what? Remember when I said that you had some remorse? When I said that you had a certain amount of remorse, I was mistaken.”
Bryant continued to rage, “F**** your courtroom and suck my d****.”
The judge then sentenced him to 28 years, the maximum possible for his charges.
Soon after, Bryant filed an appeal with the Ohio 11th District Court of Appeals. On Tuesday, June 7, Ohio’s Supreme Court ruled in Bryant’s favor and reinstated the original 22-year sentence.
They noted that a judge isn’t allowed to add time to a sentence because of a disrespectful outburst. Instead, a contempt of court charge should have been added on.
