A man in Pasadena, Texas, told authorities that he thought his girlfriend was a burglar. So, he fatally shot the woman.

On Monday, around 3:30 a.m., the shooting took place at an apartment at 4029 Burke Road, close to Fairmont.

The man is said to have thought he heard a break-in at the door and retrieved his weapon.

Detectives think that his live-in girlfriend had already entered the apartment when the shooting occurred.

Reportedly, the woman was shot multiple times and transported to Memorial Hermann by Life Flight. She was declared deceased a little while later.

Police say that damage was seen on the door but aren’t sure if that was new or old.

“We’re going to collect shell casings. We’re going to look at the trajectory of the bullets and compare that to his statement. If it truly is accidental, obviously this is a very sad situation…,” stated Sgt. Raul Granados. He added the investigation will determine if the man will face charges.

Authorities say that the boyfriend stayed at the location and is cooperating.
