In less than a week, Texas mother, Melissa Lucio, is supposed to be executed. This is for the killing of her 2-year-old daughter.

Lucio’s case has been given national attention. This includes a lot of support from politicians and celebrities.

Lucio’s family is hoping that someone will be able to halt this execution.

“It’s been very emotional. I don’t even know the words to tell it,” said John Lucio, Melissa’s son. The thought that Melissa could be put to death is really becoming a reality for her family.

State lawmakers, on both sides, have encouraged the Cameron County district attorney to look into the case again.

In 2007, Lucio was found guilty of capital murder in the death of her daughter, Mariah.

Prosecutors had said that there was proof that Mariah was abused, and Lucio had been abusing drugs. She had lost her rights to some of her children, and they had been removed from her home.

It was also reported that a doctor had pertinent information. He had seen the child that night at the hospital and didn’t see signs of abuse. However, he didn’t know a trial was taking place back then, or he would have testified.

Additionally, Lucio’s lawyers say forensic evidence indicated that the child’s injuries were “consistent with falling down stairs.”

Governor Abbott has the power to pardon Lucio. He could also postpone her execution by 30 days. However, time is running out. She is set to be executed on April 27.
