Two men have been placed in custody in Burke County, North Carolina, by U.S. Marshals as they are interviewed in the killing of a Wake County, North Carolina, deputy.

On Tuesday afternoon, two men were pulled over in two separate traffic stops, along Interstate 40. They had been traveling together but split up when authorities got close. A short time later, dozens of deputies descended upon the scene, and federal agents took the men into custody after they were stopped.

On August 11, Deputy Ned Byrd was shot and killed in a dark area of Battle Bridge Road. It isn’t known why he had stopped there. Authorities say that he had answered to a domestic call less than a mile from the location, a little while earlier. He then typed his notes into the system.

On Monday, the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association had offered a $100,000 reward for details leading to an apprehension and conviction in the killing of Byrd.
